Bulls In Pamplona - Its Great Spain Festival

Pamplona has a long history, founded in the first century by the Romans as a camp on which to keep their eyes on the nearby Basque settlement of Iruna. Situated in the basin of the River Arga in the shadow of the Pyrenees, Pamplona is an eclectic mix of old and new. The town is the capital of the province of Navarre and renowned throughout the World for its Fiesta of San Fermin which features the annual 'running with the bulls' spectacular.

The Fiesta is famous for supplying two things in abundance: bulls and alcohol. However, it is very important that you never mix the two! Brought to the world's attention by Ernest Hemingway and latterly featured in the popular 1991 Hollywood film City Slickers; the highlight of the Fiesta of San Fermin is most definitely the Bull Run.

The Encierro, as it is known, takes place each morning at 8.00 a.m. from 7th to 14th July every year. Bulls that will be used in the bullfights later that evening are released into the street. There are no application forms or waiting lists for those who want to run with the Bulls in Pamplona; anyone can take part. Just pick your spot on the 830 metre course, approx half a mile in length, well in advance. Wooden fencing marks the course and on the dot of 8.00 a.m. each morning a rocket is released to alert everyone to the letting out of the bulls. Once all the bulls have been released a second rocket is set off. Then the fun begins.

Anyone who has ever attended an Encierro will put running with the bulls as one of the most exciting things they have ever done. If you decide to run with the bulls in Pamplona the most important thing to remember however is that, even if you are an Olympic sprinter, you cannot outrun them. The best bet is to be at least 50 metres ahead of the rampaging beasts and be ready to jump over the fence when you start to run out of breath and they get closer!

Getting accommodation in Pamplona around festival time can be challenging! Most people book up at least a year in advance, or opt to camp, sleep in their car or merely stay up all night making the most of the festivities!

Getting there is not a problem with regular low-cost flights available to Bilbao, 70 miles away or San Sebastian, within 40 miles. They are better options than flying directly to Pamplona as only Iberia actually flies there and the cost of those flights often outweighs the convenience of landing in the town.

Other than the Fiesta and the bull run there are two other sites of note in Pamplona; the Plaza del Castillo, and the 17th century fortress, the Ciudadela.

Whether you are going for the thrills of the Fiesta, to experience the sights and sounds of Pamplona or both, you won't be disappointed. This part of Spain offers man-made and natural beauty in equal amounts and extends all visitors a warm welcome.

Suffolk is nestled in East Anglia and neighbours Norfolk, Cambridgeshire and Essex.
Suffolk is a place which offers up stunning rural countryside. It envelopes many quaint villages and has been an inspiration for no less than 2 famous painters,
John Constable and Thomas Gainsbourough.

The town of Newmarket is famous as the home of Horse (Flat) Racing.

If it is the sea that interests you Aldburgh, Southwold or Dunwich are the perfect English seaside locations to take in the natural beauty.

Quaint villages in Suffolk include:-

Lavenham, which attracts many visitors every year who are drawn by the display of half-timbered medieval cottages. Once described as "the most complete medieval town in Britain", Lavenham shares a magnificent collection of medieval and Tudor architecture. Lavenhams older buildings are gathered around the market place. The National Trust owns the Guildhall which now displays a permanent local history exhibition.

Long Melford. Here you will find a host of antique shops excellent places to eat as well as historic buildings which include Long Melford Hall and Kentwell Hall.

Long Melford Hall has changed very little since 1578. It has managed to retain its original panelled banqueting hall which is where Queen Elizabeth I was often entertained. A small display of items connected with Beatrix Potter remind us that she was related to the family, The Hyde Parkers (former residents)

Kentwell Hall was built in the early 16th century by the Clopton family. It is surrounded by a moat which is very befitting of this stunning Tudor Manor. The exterior of Kentwell has changed little over the years, however this cannot be said of the interior though, as much has been done to renovate and refurbish it.

Kentwell Hall often has Tudor days and one can dress in the costumes of the time and truly experience life as it was all those years ago.

Framlingham is a twelfth century castle which consists of a continuous curtain-like wall that joins thirteen enormous towers.

Next we have Bury St Edmunds which has close associations with The Magna Carta and is also known as the cathedral town of Suffolk. Bury St Edmunds is steeped in history and offers up amazing architecture and a museum to share its secrets to anyone who is interested.

Ipswich is the county town of Suffolk and of course home to its football club at Portman Road.

You cannot visit Suffolk without finding out about the great artists that it has produced in times gone by. Thomas Gainsborough’s house is now a museum, the only artist's birthplace open to the public in the whole of Britain, which was established in 1961. Here visitors are able to see a large collection of the artist paintings.

John Constable, is arguably the greatest and most original of all British landscape artists. He is most famous for is his views of Flatford and the Stour Valley in Suffolk, Hampstead Heath and Salisbury Cathedral.

Flatford and the Bridge Cottage complex are both run by the National Trust and you can see the Constable exhibition here.

Halesworth was originally a roman settlement and is set in a lovely area. It hosts the yearly “gig in the park” in August.

The beautiful Orford Coastal village offers bird watching, a chance to go boating, a host of historic buildings and for the more energetic, sporting activities too.

Woodbridge also offer some pleasant surprises for the interested visitor such as Sutton Hoo Anglo-Saxon Ship Burial, Shire Hall stands in the middle of Market Hill, and has been the focal point of the town for over 400 years.

Last but by no means least, Snape now better known for Snape Maltings is no longer used commercially. It was converted into a tourist centre together with a concert hall that now hosts a major part of the annual Aldeburgh Festival.

There are really two worlds on Spain’s southern coast – the highly developed coastal strip, including resorts like Torremolinos, Fuengirola and Marbella, and inland the timeless, Moorish-influenced Andalucia of Granada, Ronda and the ‘white villages’. Hotel developments straddle both these worlds. You can choose to be on the coast or up in the hills, though you will certainly need a car if you stay far inland.

This area is one of the worlds major golf centres, with dozen of beautifully designed and tended courses to choose from.

The Costa del Sol has Spain’s mildest winter climate, which is why more and more people are taking long winter breaks away from the rigours and heating bills of a British winter.

Torremolinos in particular is great fun, and Marbella and the nearby Puerto Banus remain stylish and chic. If you really do want peace and quiet, you can always head for the hills, or further east where the stretch beyond Malaga is less developed. Nerja is the main resort here, and very pleasant it is too.

The eastern part of the Costa del Sol has many small coves and beaches and a more Spanish feel than the rest. The attractive resorts of Almunecar and Motril are in the province of Granada, whose coast is sometimes known as the Costa Tropical.

Whatever you call it, this is an interesting area. Inland is the Sierra Nevada and a series of smaller hill ranges including the Alpujarras, made famous by Dave Stewart in his book ‘ Driving over Lemons’. There has been very little tourist development in these hills, and as a result you can see old Spain.

The vast majority of holiday accommodation remains west of Malaga. Mijas just inland from Fuengirola is a good example.

If you can tear yourself away from the beach or pool, a visit to Grenada and its Alhambra (the wonderful Moorish palace) is well worth while. It’s also straightforward now to visit Gibraltar for the day, and there’s a good road up to Ronda, with its bullring and spectacular position atop an inland cliff.

Perhaps your soul and your romance needs to be rejuvenated as well? Then Provence will provide that needed tranquility in a mild Mediterranean climate.

Once in the heart of Provence you can drink in the natural and rugged beauty that fills the region. Within a short drive of the villages of Saint-Remy-de Provence, Arles, Les Baux and Avignon are the Massif des Alpille Mountains which stretch between the towns and are great for hiking or cycling. Once at the summit of these majestic ranges, the panoramic views of Provence are stunning.

Arles is home to the famous French bull fighting, which takes place in the Roman arena. Bullfighting was first introduced in France in 1701 and has become increasingly more popular over the years. Traditional French bullfighting is a twice-a-day event that begins at Easter and with events scheduled all the way through to September...a must see event for those visiting Provence.

If you love nature, you will want to take a short drive to the Camargue Wetlands, just south of Arles. The wetlands are home to over 400 species of birds, wild horses, and the famous Camaruge bulls that roam to and fro. The soil is rich delta soil, as the Camargue is located between the Mediterranean Sea and two arms of the Rhone River delta. The flora there is adapted to high saline content, and the sea lavender displays are spectacular.

For those of you who have a deep appreciation for architecture and the arts, you will want to take the time to explore ancient villages in the region. As you walk, you will be retracing the very steps that world renowned artists such as Van Gogh trod centuries ago. The village of Les Baux de Provence is a 10th Century village, with many buildings that have been lovingly restored. It will take about 1 ½ hours to walk through the village, the ancient castle and the citadel ruins. If you visit during the month of May, there are more than a dozen neighboring estates that are open to visitors during the annual Wine Festival. Visitors are encouraged to call ahead and arrange mutually convenient times for tours.

The Palais des Papes is located in the village of Avignon, just 25 kilometers from Les Baux de Provence. Built in the 1300’s, it is the largest Gothic palace in Europe and offers tours through more than two dozen rooms of the palace. Visitors can enjoy courtyard performances given by the Avignon Theatre during July; as well as the art exhibit in the Great Chapel, which is on display throughout the summer.

You could spend a year in this beautiful city and still not have seen and experienced all it has to offer, but let’s see what we can do to make sure you don’t miss out on the ‘Must Sees’ - especially for first-timers.

The idea of this itinerary is to whet your appetite so that you return as soon as possible to do Cape Town full justice!

On landing at Cape Town International Airport, let’s for argument’s sake assume your flight lands at 8 a.m., you need to retrieve your luggage, collect your hire car, and head directly to the Table Mountain Cable Way, above Cape Town’s city centre. Leave the bulk of your luggage and simply take a back pack with money, a camera, sunblock and a warm top. Your early arrival should ensure that you don’t need to queue for very long. The ride up in the revolving cable car offers your first real look at the sprawling city and surrounds – with a unique 360 degree perspective. Once you arrive at the top you can enjoy breakfast at the restaurant, taking the time to fill in postcards bragging to your friends that you are having your first meal in the Cape on top of one of the world’s most famous and imposing landmark mountains!

Don’t linger too long over that second cup of coffee – you need to be down by midday to go into the CBD for a spot of shopping and exploring.
